As the bloodshed in the ongoing battle of Gaza entered its fourth week, more than 1,060 Palestinians in Gaza, more than 70 percent of them civilians have been killed, with more than 6,200 wounded, according to the United Nations. Israel has lost 53 soldiers, the largest toll since its 2006 war with Lebanon. Hamas mortar and rocket attacks from Gaza have killed two Israeli civilians and onea Thai worker in Israel.

After Israel rejected a cease-fire draft proposed by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry the UN Security Council called on July 28th for "an immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire" in the Gaza war, joining a similar call by U.S. President Barack Obama a day earlier. In rebuffing international demands for an end to his nation’s military assault on Gaza Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address, “We will not finish the mission, we will not finish the operation, without neutralizing the tunnels” through which Hamas fighters have sought to infiltrate Israel. For its part Gaza’s Hamas government is demanding that any cease-fire include an end to the economic blockade, the easing of travel restrictions and the release of Hamas members who were jailed after the killing of three Jewish teenagers in the West Bank last month.

The Israeli military operation known as “Protective Edge” continued the destruction of targets in Gaza that included underground tunnels, suspected sites of rocket launchers and arms caches and the homes of Hamas leaders. Several Gaza hospitals and UN operated schools used as shelters have also been attacked. In addition Gaza’s only power plant was shelled, cutting off electric power for vital services including water and sanitation. Between The Lines’ Scott Harris spoke with citizen activist, author and four-time independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader, who observes that the ongoing Gaza conflict is an inevitable result of Israel’s suffocating economic blockade and more than 45 years of illegal occupation.
