Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Bradley Manning Pleads Guilty to 10 Charges, Explains Motive for Release of Classified Government Documents to WikiLeaks

Interview with Nathan Fuller, Bradley Manning Support Network member, conducted by Scott Harris

bradleymanning

Before a military judge during a pre-trial hearing at Fort Meade, Md. on Feb. 28, Army Pfc. Bradley Manning pled guilty to 10 charges, facing up to 20 years in prison, while contesting 12 more serious charges for his release of hundreds of thousands of classified government documents to WikiLeaks. Imprisoned for more than 1,000 days since his arrest in May 2010, with part of that time spent in solitary confinement or under harsh conditions, the 25-year-old former intelligence analyst will face a court martial in June on charges that include “aiding the enemy,” which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Reading from a prepared 35-page statement in court, Manning explained for the first time the motivation behind his transfer of hundreds of thousands of Pentagon and State Department documents to the not-for-profit WikiLeaks media organization. Among the battle logs and diplomatic cables released by Manning was the remarkable real-time video account of a 2007 U.S. Apache helicopter assault in Baghdad that resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians, including 2 Reuters news staffers. Of that video and the other documents made public, Manning explained that he hoped to “spark domestic debate” about U.S. foreign policy and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said, "I felt I accomplished something that would allow me to have a clear conscience.” Between The Lines’ Scott Harris spoke with Nathan Fuller of the Bradley Manning Support Network, a group that raises funds for Manning’s legal defense. Here Fuller discusses Manning’s guilty pleas on 10 charges, the account of why he released classified U.S. documents and his coming court martial.
