Between The Lines’ Subscriptions/Feeds

There are several ways to access content from Between The Lines:

You can   subscribe   to the audio podcast.

You can  subscribe  to Between The Lines to receive RSS feeds of either text and audio or text only.

You can  subscribe  via email.

You can   download  individual segments or shows from our archive.

What are podcasts?

Podcasts are recordings of radio shows or other audio programs, generally provided in the form of MP3 audio files, which are compressed to reduce download time and can be downloaded automatically via the Internet with podcast software. The maker of a podcast, called a "podcaster," will periodically provide additional episodes of a given program. You can subscribe to a podcast using software designed for the purpose. This software will automatically check to see if any new episodes of the programs are available and will automatically download the episodes. You can listen to such a downloaded recording using MP3 player software on your computer or transfer it an MP3 playing device, such as an iPod, to listen to it on the go.

What software do I need to listen to a podcast?

You will need "podcatcher" software, which can be programmed to poll a server periodically for new items, and download them to your computer or mobile device. Software in this category includes Juice (formerly iPodder - Mac OS X, Windows XP or Linux), Doppler (Mac or Windows), iTunes (Mac or Windows), and GoogleListen (Android).

You will also need an MP3 player, either in the form of a mobile MP3 player or a mobile phone with MP3 capability or software on your computer, like RealPlayer (Mac or Windows), QuickTime (Mac or Windows), Windows Media Player (Mac or Windows), Winamp (Windows only) or GoogleListen (Android).

Subscribe with iTunes iTunes Podcast audio (podcast) (~7MB)

Subscribe with Juice or other non iTunes player (broadcast-quality MP3 (~26.6MB))

Subscribe with Juice or other non iTunes player (near broadcast-quality MP3, (~13MB))

What is RSS? What software do I need to get my subscription or feed?

rssReally Simple Syndication (RSS) is designed for sharing headlines and other web content, such as audio files. Think of it as a distributable “What's New” from your favorite websites. RSS is a way to stay up to date with the latest headlines, stories, links to full-length articles and audio files. You’ll know when an RSS feed is available when you see an orange RSS logo like the one to the right.

Where can I get an RSS reader?

There are three ways to read feeds:

  1. Use the built-in RSS reader in Firefox (Mac & Windows), IE7 and above (Windows only) and Safari (Mac & Windows). Look for the orange RSS logo or the letters “RSS” to the right in the url address bar. If you see the logo or “RSS,” click on it and you'll get the feed.
  2. Read feeds within your customized iGoogle or MyYahoo page. In iGoogle, click on more, go to Google Reader and click on Add Subscription or on your MyYahoo page, Click on Add Content and Add RSS Feed.
  3. Read feeds with dedicated RSS readers, like the free application Amphetadesk, available for Mac OS, Windows and Linux, or a website like Bloglines or a standalone RSS reader, like the free application Amphetadesk, available for Mac OS, Windows and Linux.
