Saudi Arabian Monarchy Linked to ISIS and Other Islamist Terrorist Groups

Just hours before President Obama was scheduled to deliver a speech before the United Nations in New York, the White House announced that for the first time since the U.S. launched airstrikes targeting the Islamist militant group ISIS in northern Iraq, American warplanes and cruise missiles struck the group’s forces inside Syria. Among the targets of airstrikes that began on Sept. 22 were buildings reportedly occupied by ISIS leaders in the Syrian city of Raqqah, the group’s self-declared capital. Other sites struck included training sites, supply lines and weapons depots. Another Syrian-based group that the administration charged was plotting attacks against the U.S., the Khorasan Group, was also bombed.

Although the U.S. has supported groups fighting to overthrow the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, the airstrikes targeting ISIS struck a blow against Assad’s fiercest enemy – all part of a confusing set of shifting alliances among bitter adversaries.

Since President Obama declared his intention to degrade and destroy ISIS, he stated that building a coalition of Arab nations to participate in the fight would be a priority. During the first attack inside Syria, American officials said that Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain had participated. Qatar was also said to have played a supporting role. The involvement of these governments in attacks against ISIS is a paradox, according to Ali Al-Ahmed, director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs, who charges that Gulf monarchies, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan have supported ISIS and other violent Islamist terrorist groups across the Middle East. Between The Lines’ Scott Harris spoke with Al-Ahmed, who explains why he believes Washington must confront and hold these long-time U.S. allies accountable for their "regressive influence through much of the region."
