California Court Approves Gay Marriage,
The California Supreme Court ruled on May 15 that the state law banning marriage between same-sex couples is unconstitutional. The decision will make California the second state, after Massachusetts, where gay and lesbian residents can legally marry. The Court, by a 4 to 3 margin, overturned Proposition 22, approved by 62 percent of California voters in 2000, that outlawed gay marriage. Major Referendum Battle is Set for November Interview with Wayne Beson, founding executive director of the Gay rights group, Truth Wins Out, conducted by Scott Harris A coalition of social conservative groups and churches recently submitted more than one million signatures needed to place a referendum question on the November ballot that would ban gay marriage within the state constitution. Although California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had twice vetoed laws passed by the state legislature legalizing gay marriage, the movie actor turned politician does not support the ballot initiative. In reacting to the decision, Barack Obama's campaign issued a statement saying that the candidate respects the decision of the California Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage. In contrast, Republican candidate John McCain said he supports the right of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution sanctioning the union between a man and a woman. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Wayne Beson, founding executive director of the gay rights group, Truth Wins Out. He explains his support for the court ruling and assesses the impact the decision may have on the presidential campaign. Wayne Beson is founding executive director of the gay rights group, Truth Wins Out. Contact the group by calling (347) 463-9582 or visit their website at truthwinsout.org
