 Instability Plagues Pakistan after Bhutto Assassination Interview with Junaid Ahmad, of the People's Rights Movement, conducted by Scott Harris  Benazir Bhutto's 19-year-old son, Bilawal, was appointed the new chairman of the Pakistan People's Party. The Oxford University student called for a U.N.-backed investigation of his mother's murder, maintaining that the government failed to provide her with adequate security and he did not trust them to solve her murder. The New York Times recently reported that Bush administration officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and national security aides discussed a new proposal for CIA operatives based in Afghanistan to direct military support for counter-terrorism operations in neighboring Pakistan. However, Pakistan's chief military spokesman, Maj. General Waheed Arshad, said such reports were baseless. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Junaid Ahmad, of the Pakistan-based People's Rights Movement, who assesses the situation in Pakistan after Benazir Bhutto's assassination and the likely consequences of any future U.S. covert strikes inside Pakistan. Destruction of CIA Torture TapesDesigned to Protect Bush White House Interview with Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, conducted by Scott Harris 
A federal judge and the former co-chairmen of the bipartisan September 11th commission have asserted that the CIA obstructed their investigations by not informing them of the existence of the interrogation tapes. Although there had been a growing demand for a special counsel in the case, Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed a federal prosecutor from Connecticut to lead a Department of Justice investigation into the matter. In December, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have prohibited the CIA from using harsh interrogation methods including waterboarding, mock executions and other techniques banned in the U.S. Army's field manual on interrogation. Between the Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, who explains why he believes that the destruction of the interrogation video tapes was designed to protect senior Bush administration officials from prosecution. Contact the Center by calling (212) 614-6464 or visit their website at www.ccrjustice.org States Sue EPA for DenyingWaiver on California's Stricter Vehicle Emission Standards Interview with Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut attorney general, conducted by Melinda Tuhus  Sixteen other states are ready to follow the California standards, which are stricter than the new mileage standards included in the energy bill recently passed by Congress. The Bush administration contends that the new law will cover the whole nation and they do not want to see a "patchwork" of different regulations state by state. But California and other state officials contest that view. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who was in the lead among 15 other state officials that joined California's lawsuit against the EPA in support of that state's waiver request. Blumenthal explains the differences between the bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush and the California car emission standards.
