Interview with Brandon Friedman,
Not long after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, pro-football star Pat Tillman turned down a multi-million dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals and joined the U.S. Army. While serving in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger, Corporal Tillman was killed on April 22, 2004. Although military investigators soon determined that the former NFL player had been killed by "friendly fire," Pentagon officials advised the family and the public that he had died a hero during a firefight with enemy troops -- a story repeated by the White House. Pat Tillman's mother, Mary, has accused the Bush administration of covering up the facts surrounding her son's death, and awarding him a posthumous Silver Star in order to exploit his death to bolster support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In congressional hearings, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and a succession of generals maintained that the flawed information about Tillman's death was due to incompetence and not a conspiracy. However, citing "executive privilege," the White House has refused to turn over documents related to Tillman's death to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Representative Henry Waxman, D-Calif. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Brandon Friedman, who served with the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division in Iraq and Afghanistan. Friedman, who is now vice -chairman of VoteVets.org, discusses his group's concern about a possible government cover-up in reporting the death of Pat Tillman. Friedman's recently published book is titled, "The War I Always Wanted: The Illusion of Glory and the Reality of War."
